“Moving up the waste hierarchy – best practice examples”
The waste management sector welcomes the focus of the European Commission on a better enforcement of waste legislation. Ensuring a legislative level playing field and legal certainty is key for a fair and competitive market.
The Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC stipulates the five-step waste hierarchy and sets recycling targets. Further boosting the recycling rates is a central goal of the European Commission’s raw materials and resource efficiency roadmap. Most of the new Member States however are still lacking a modern waste management infrastructure. The role of an efficient application of the cohesion policy during the next funding period in order to create the required infrastructure for sustainable waste management is therefore key.
Based on best practice examples from some European member states it will be demonstrated how the right policy mix of legal and economic measures is leading to a continuous moving up of the waste hierarchy.
